Everyone wants more traffic. But most do not know how to excel at the one thing that will insure their site is jammed with traffic like a Los Angeles freeway at rush hour. That is, they fail to do anywhere near enough keyword marketing research.
Granted reading one article will not you an expert make. But I can at least begin to bring you up to speed when it comes to finding visitor laden top search terms. To do so I will reveal four of my sacred keyword research rules of thumb.
My first rule of thumb is simple. Do not settle for the obvious keyword phrases. I know. Sounds obvious. But apparently isn't.
For example the term "easter baskets" gets 120 searches/day. While going up against 420,00 other pages.
Not insurmountable. But I like less of a challenge. Especially when "personalized easter baskets" gets 109 searches/day and only has 615 competitors.
See the difference one word makes? Similar to the difference between lightning and a lightning bug, no? Since you get nearly the same number of searches with no where near the same number of competing pages.
The next secret rule of thumb is to compare the plural verses singular forms to see which is better. Since when it comes to this most webmasters tend to pile onto the wrong choice.
Take the term "gold earrings" It gets 168 daily searches in all engines, and has 1,540,000 competing pages in Google. While "gold earring" gets 84 daily searches and faces 440,000 competitors. In other words it has less than a third of the competition for half the searches. So we're on the right track. Best of all "italian gold earrings" is used by 52 searchers daily. And only has to fend off 514 pesky competitors. Or what you might call a slam dunk.
Your third keyword research tactic involves grabbing the low hanging fruit. Or what I call "orphan keywords".
Ideally you're looking search terms with less than 1000 competing pages in Google when searching for the EXACT phrase. 500 or less is better still.
Of course the closer to 10 competing pages you get for a search term, the more likely it is your page will be to stumble into the top 10. These are true "orphan keywords". So named due to neglect by your competitors.
Then don't forget to think outside the box. Just like your potential customers do.
Say you had a law practice in California. One term you might consider is "criminal defense attorney". That gets 131 searches but faces 1,450,000 competing pages. I'm not wild about those odds. Plus the term really isn't very targeted.
Digging deeper I found that "criminal defense attorney LA" gets 85 daily searches. And only has 11,1100 pages to beat out. Not bad.
Digging deeper still "criminal defense attorney la county" gets 84 daily searches. But only has 575 competing pages. Paydirt!
Once again I turned up a search term with total searches at least in the same ball park as the generic term I started with. Yet with just a handful of competing pages to deal with. Rarely do I fail to do this. In fact you'll discover dozens of such gems by thoroughly researching your keyword universe.
Never forget that keyword marketing research is THE factor that determines the success or failure of your niche site. Applying rules of thumb like these can help you do smarter optimised keyword marketing. Which in turn will help you attract more traffic from search engines more easily. And traffic is something we could all use more of, right?

Search Engine Marketing
As part of your overall Internet marketing strategy, it is important to devote resources to search engine marketing. This component of your marketing mix has become increasingly critical due to the importance that search engines and directories play in how prospects access information. Search engines have the advantage of driving highly qualified traffic due to the self-selection process initiated by the searcher in choosing their search query.
Research shows that there are more than 8 hundred million people in the world have the habit to access Internet. 86% of them tend to locate information via search engines. In addition, research shows that most people will only look at 2 to 3 pages of search results, so your ranking among the results is becoming increasingly important.
When developing your search engine strategy you need to understand how search engines work, how they are different from directories, and how to maximize their effectiveness in making sure that your business gets as much exposure as your budget allows.
Search Engines populate their databases for search results through robotic software programs that crawl the web looking for content to index. This crawling requires that the software find text-based machine-readable content to index and categorize a site. The content accessed is from the meta tags (title, description, keywords, alt image tags), filenames and content on pages throughout your site. Spiders tend to look at the root directory, 1st level files and occasionally will spider your site to 2nd level content. To determine a site’s meta tags, right click your mouse and select View Source.
If your site has not been developed with search engines in mind, you could have difficulty in having your content properly indexed. Search engines also determine relative rankings of results based on certain algorithms that include factors like link popularity, site traffic, site content, etc.
When search engines first evolved, they were based on a “free” business model, where conceptually all sites had an equal chance of being indexed and displayed in search results if their developers optimized with some basic steps. While the basic steps are still an important part of your search engine marketing strategy, they no longer are enough. This is due to the fact that many search engines (and dot bombs) found that it wasn’t just about capturing eyeballs, but was also about making money. This has led search engines to modify their business models to capitalize on all possible sources of revenue generated by their traffic and/or technology. Traffic was seen as a logical source for advertising revenues and technology was felt to be transferable for use at other sites requiring robust search engines. To date, most search engines have not elected to go towards a subscription-based model where searchers get charged for accessing information. These new business models require that site developers work even more closely with marketing strategists to ensure that the most effective business decisions are made.

Should Meta Tags Be Used With Search Engine Optimization?
I deal with many questions from curious website owners everyday. One question I have a new answer for is, "Should I use META tags on my site when do search engine optimization?" Old Answer: It couldn't hurt, but don't worry about them, the search engines ignore them for the most part. New answer? Read on...
Should I really use a META tag? Really?
The new answer is yes, you should use META tags on your site. The keyword META tag is still not used by search engines but when submitting to directories, a valuable use of time by the way, the META keywords are used in many cases to automatically fill in the keywords for your site in that directory.
Even more amazingly, the META description tag has soared in importance. How so you ask? Google has started showing the META description in its search results when certain criteria are met.
The criteria being used appears to be very simple, unlike many of the other things Google does. When the keyword or search terms appear in the META description, the META description is used instead of the snippet of text containing the keyword on your page.
For example, if you do a search in Google for 'Big Oak SEO' you will see our site in the first listing and the description used is our META description tag. All three words being searched for are also in our META description.
If you do a search for 'big oak client' you will see the first listing is pulling a snippet of text from the page itself. Since 'client' is not in our META description, it uses a snippet of text from the page where all three words can be found.
Where should you use a META description tag?
Every website should use a META description tag on the home page at the very least. This way you can say exactly what you want and not worry the snippet of text being used is not best choice for your message. What this really means is Google is giving us some measure of control.
And now that we have this knowledge and control, how best to use it? This allows us to take off our search engine optimizer hats and don our search engine marketer hats. Think of what you can say in the brief sentence that will entice a user to click your link rather than the one above or below. You can put your phone number in the META description for starters or how about being really creative and offer a discount or advertise a sale. Tell them your unique selling proposition. It should be a one sentence phrase already in your head. The only caveat to remember is that your META description will only show if the search term is in the META description. While this can be tricky, it can be done with some forethought. You can do this for all of your targeted pages and have dozens of marketing messages.
Use the META description wisely: target your market and entice your customers. Do not abuse this control and put outlandish, untrue or slanderous statements as I am sure Google will be watching; and if this technique is abused the META description may have seen its last search result this time.

RSS Feed Submission Established as a Good SEO Linking Campaign
When you publish a blog, RSS feeds are great ways to get your message out and connect with readers in your target market. RSS feeds allow you to broadcast out your messages, bring in new readers to your blog with an interest in your chosen topic, and build-up a committed reader-base, all at the same time. In addition, RSS feeds are a great choice of a variety of tools which can help with your SEO linking campaign.
One of the first things you quickly discover as a blogger is that a successful search engine optimization campaign can take up a ton of your time, and raise your frustration level to new heights, all at the same time. Many new bloggers generally start with the blog submit sites and even attempt manual RSS feed submit techniques, but eventually they all end up deciding that it is just all too much work to do with any real regularity. However, if they give up completely it really hurts their SEO efforts and their ability to grow and monetize their blog successfully. And, if they choose to do it half-heartedly or only occasionally, then it really isn’t a very successful to help improve their search engine rankings.
The problem with using a manual feed submitter, or using an individual RSS submitter even, is that it is very time consuming to deal with on a consistent basis. Most bloggers simply want to blog and get their words out to the world; they do not want to spend hours upon hours on their SEO and marketing efforts. By submitting your RSS feed to each site at a time, you can easily spend hours upon hours of time and never really get too much return for all of your work.
Software programmers, many of them bloggers themselves, have developed some great semi-automatic RSS feed submit tools which you can now choose from to help submit your RSS feed without it being such a time consuming proposition. These software programs allow you to simultaneously submit your blog and RSS feeds to literally thousands of directories, and to do it all with only a couple quick mouse-clicks.
Setting up the RSS feed submission software is a breeze and the submission process takes less than ten or fifteen minutes each day, from start to finish, making it much faster and easier than manual RSS submit attempts.
If you are a blogger interested in publishing RSS and getting your feed out into the RSS databases of the world, I would highly suggest that you check out some of the amazing new RSS software tools available to you today on the market. Choose a tool that is easy to use and one which will allow you to reach the maximum amount of directories possible for the least amount of hands-on work. Additionally, if you are taking the time to use more robust XML feed technologies, you want to use a semi-automatic feed submitter for those as well.
By remembering that your ultimate goal as a blogger or webmaster is always the most exposure and back links possible, for the least amount of your time, you simply cannot go wrong using a semi-automatic feed submitter. And, your search engine rankings will soar through the roof as a nice by-product of all of that exposure and linking.

The Jury Is Out On Keyword Discovery
A great new software, maybe....... but is the price worth it?
The major problem I have with the software is that it only gives a full 12 months demand/competition figures unless you upgrade to the "Paid API" version which will cost you $400 per month or $3000 a year.
The question you need to ask is "what are you using keyword tools for"?
To make money today? Or to obtain yearly stats? With that in mind, here are a few problems.....
1. If we are looking to make money today (which most of us are) ...... We need statistics that are up to date for the present...... The keyword "web traffic" at the present gets a lots less hits than "increase web site traffic".... But if I were to use keyword discovery it would actually tell me the opposite based on "yearly" figures.
Now if I were a keyword discovery subscriber, only used KD and started doing a lot of work on "web traffic", optimizing my pages, increasing inbound links, etc. And then later I found out that the stats where wrong and I was doing all the work on keywords that were actually receiving a lot less hits, I would be pretty angry to say the least.
So the major problem is this.... I use keyword tracker, I find 100 terms with high demand/low comp right at this present time..... I throw up 100 pages based on those terms and get high ranking for 40..... I make many sales
I use keyword discovery (standard subscription), I find 100 terms with high demand/low comp over one year...... I throw up 100 pages based on those terms........ And only get high ranking on 10 "because" 50% of those terms "right at this very moment/right now" have a lot more comp or less demand than they had 6 months ago.
2. Now say we want long term results? This would be beneficial if we find keywords that continually have high/demand low comp over one year. However from my experience this is very rarely the case due to "online competition" and an ever changing marketing environment.
It would be of benefit to larger websites looking for "medium" competition rates on keywords of which they wish to dominate. With this they then implement an SEO campaign to gain ranking.
3. Having all the country SE's is a benefit but only if you can localize..... As I am trying to rank for terms on search engines where my listing appears, including searches from engines where it will not only distorts my figures and therefore what words I may try and optimize.
4. Where are the KEI results taken from? Not meaning the search term itself but the occurrences? Pages/websites for what search engines... I could not find this information.
So what does this all boil down to?
*If you want long term keyword stats for your online business..... KD just might be the software for you. In all fairness it does also include many other features that you will not find at Keyword Tracker, if these are what your company requires.
If your looking for long term stats but without the competition ratio try...
* If your looking for short term stats you have two choices....
Keyword Discovery at a price of $3000 per year
>> http://www.keyworddiscovery.com
Or Keyword Tracker at $250 per year
>> http://www.web-traffic-toolz.com/wordtracker.html
Like I said the juries out and it all boils down to what type of service and tools your looking for but as the saying goes.... "the devil is in the detail".
