The Science of Search Engine Promotion

At least 75% of Internet users use search engines to find information, services and products. These users reach the site after an active research. Therefore these do not only represent hits, but potential clients. Search engine promotion involves promoting your website through various online channels in order to increase visibility and your potential to receive a higher page ranking or position within the search engine results pages. Common search engine promotion campaigns include article marketing, press release, optimization and submissions. Search engine promotion is the process of improving rankings, visitor numbers and utilizing search engines to promote brand awareness. Every activity whose purpose is to promote a site and provide hits through search engines comes under the orb of Search engine promotion. Search Engine Promotion is designed to build upon the 'Search Engine Optimisation' process by taking your website even further up the Search Engine rankings. Whereas building a 'Search Engine friendly' website or 'optimizing' your website for the Search Engines are normally one-off tasks, 'Search Engine Promotion' is a regular ongoing process. In December 2006, 6.5 billion searches were carried out in search engines. People are not just looking for information; around 25% of all online purchases originate from search engines. It's crucial that your site gets the best possible position in the search results for your products. Search engine promotion and search engine optimization is a must if you want to maximise your online presence. Search engine promotion is known by many different names, search engine optimisation, search engine positioning, online marketing, but all of them are essentially the same thing which is to get websites visibility by making them appear to more users when a person types in a keyword or looks at a directory listing in a search engine or directory. Unlike the yellow pages, search engines don't order web sites alphabetically, they give you the results in the order they think is the most relevant to your search. So to get to the top: there are lots of small things that need to be done on your web site. 98.8% of internet users report using search engines. The ultimate aim of having your site optimised is to increase traffic. Having your site optimized, means greatly increasing your visibility, your profile and therefore the volume of potential customers visiting your site. Nowadays Search Engines are basically looking to see if they consider your site to be 'important'. They also want to be able to 'understand' what your site is about. That's where Search Engine Promotion comes in. It involves SEO services to optimize a website to increase search engine visibility. By increasing the visibility, and the interpretive importance of a web site according to relevant keywords, the site will more likely to be found by your next prospective customers.

Wordtracker: a Must for any Search Engine Optimization Project

While many factors influence the rankings of a web site, any search engine optimization effort isn’t worth even a second of your time without one and single unknown: relevant and competitive keywords.

Let’s examine an example: a local moving company decided to optimize its website. It knows (or assumes that it does) that the most popular keywords for their type of business are “movers” and “moving”. At a first glance, looks like everything’s fine: the keywords seem to be relevant, and should produce good results. However, there are two mistakes made here.

The first one is keyword relevancy. What’s the use for our local moving company of people that are looking for “movers” or “moving” in Denver, CO, Boston, MA or New York, NY, if they are located and offering services in and around San Francisco only?

Another mistake is keyword effectiveness. It’ll take much more time and effort to get top rankings for such popular and competitive general keywords as “moving” and “movers” than to get same results for something more specific and relevant, such as “movers San Francisco” or “moving San Francisco”. Not only are these keywords more likely to convert visitors to buyers, but also it’s a much easier and less time-consuming task.

If the world we live in consists of atoms, the smallest and most important particles in search engine optimization world are keywords. In fact, there’s nothing complicated about them, if one remembers three things about keywords: relevancy, effectiveness and Wordtracker.

Wordtracker.com is an UK based company that offers an irreplaceable search engine marketing service tool: keyword research and analysis. It helps to find and pick keywords that are both relevant and competitive. Relevant mean that the keywords are related to your website, and that these are the words people are typing in Google, Yahoo or MSN in order to find your kind of business. Another important factor in determining a “good” keyword is its effectiveness. Let’s say we have a keyword “movers” which has a record of appearing in Google search list for 1009 times; there are 15400000 different web pages competing for this keyword. This means that this keyword’s effectiveness index is 1009/15400000=0.066. This index shows that the keyword is far too competitive and you’ll probably end up somewhere in the middle of Google’s search results if you try to optimize your webpage for this particular keyword. A rule of thumb is to find keywords that are quite popular and at the same time have fewer webpages competing for them. A good keyword is considered to have an effectiveness index of over 100, although anything in between 10 and 100 can be targeted as well.

Needless to say, without having the right keywords that are both relevant and competitive it’s impossible to succeed in any search engine optimization campaign. Without knowing your niche words, you’ll probably end up competing against web sites with thousands of inbound links optimized by search engine optimization gurus and will be lost in millions of search results – no one will even ever find out you exist. On the other hand, all it takes to get your web traffic from 0 to couple hundreds a day might be something as simple and cost-effective as Wordtracker.

Site Maps

How will people reach the pages on your website. A proven SEO approach is to provide a simple hierarchy and text links for your website along with a site map. If you don’t have one, Google offers an online site map generator. It seems like an obvious search engine positioning technique, but worth repeating – a visitor should be able to reach each page from a static text link. Your site map point to the right page and also boosts your search engine ranking – not a bad deal. For large site maps… over a hundred links, create smaller site maps.

An important search engine marketing tool is the proper placement of titles on your web page – H1, H2, H3, and so forth. These title tags guide the search engine though you page and help it determine what to read first, second and so on. The main subject of the page should be identified with an H1 title tags and secondary subject with an H2 tag and so forth. The proper use of titles benefits both the reader and search engine optimization.

In other words, search engine positioning techniques such as meta tags are secondary to what’ written on the page. Create useful, useful, entertaining content and your meta tags will write themselves. Be sure that your pages have the words listed in the meta tags and display important names, content, or links in text not pictures. Got that? See you in Google Heaven!
