Google Sitemaps’ useful SEO Tools

One of the most useful utilities that the engineers and think tank at Google have ever devised is the Google Sitemaps program. The said program, which is a product of their much publicized and much vaunted policy of allowing its engineers to spend 20 per cent of their paid time on personal projects, has been a boon to many webmasters, website operators and SEO professionals because it has made certain aspects of their work far easier and more intuitive. Google’s decision to come out with Google Sitemaps is based mainly on the desire to present more intuitive and better search results to users. Because of the current limitations presented by web crawling, there is a high probability that not all pages in a website will be noted and registered with the search engine. There are also many variables and factors that are not addressed with the current methods and technologies used for website submissions. These limitations are what Google Sitemaps seeks to address. Google Sitemaps was officially started in June 2005. This handy utility makes the submission of web pages to Google easier. The added features though are the detailed reports that is also generated by Google Sitemaps. In order to use the Google Sitemaps program, a person need only download a free open source tool called Sitemap Generator or use one of the many 3rd party applications. These utilities are what helps in creating a sitemap of the webmaster’s website using the Sitemap protocol that is being backed by Google itself. The complement of new features that are part of the Google Sitemaps programs also means that it has become a great tool for search engine optimization professionals. The automation of these features has made it easier for SEO professionals to do their job and formulate the proper strategies to increase the page ranking of a website. For example the “top search queries” feature of Google Sitemaps allows you to see the top search queries that not only returned the client website as a result as well as those that Google searchers actually clicked on. This feature also allows you to see the top position for the website in the search results generated for either set search queries. The positions indicated are an average of the movement for the last three weeks. Since any type of error can have a detrimental effect not only on the functionality of the website but with the page ranking of a website in Google, the report function of Google Sitemaps is a big help to SEO professionals. With the new feature, a webmaster or SEO professionals can download information straight from the Sitemaps account into a comma separated value (CSV) file. This file, which can be accessed through any text editor or spreadsheet software can contain the specific details of the website, including the errors generated (via dead links, broken links, etc) or statistics. The good thing is the file can even contain the information for all of the websites operated by SEO professional and included in the Sitemaps account. This is monumentally beneficial because it fully automates the search for any dead or broken links that may otherwise be a tedious chore if done manually. The good thing here is that this is periodically updated so you will know if the changes incorporated into the website will produce broken links.

As Google gets fatter there is more to love. I do.

What Google did for Christmas? In short: Twain news on the same day simply melting the ice. Vacuum discovered. Their new services spur others in turn, their sympathies can affect some huge increase. Finally, wealth is spreading, from young billionaires to you and to a baby boomer like me. A few days ago, I ran into an article about them that claims they build a safe net for themselves, and all of us to use. How does one figure? Google silently buy left-over fiber optics at the lowest prices. Something nice for the future… Yesterday, I went to Mozilla Firefox to get a referral button for my upcoming ezine. Have been using Firefox after a 2-week spy and worm attack back in June. At that time, my desktop had been invisible from pop-up windows and the volume muted for virus alert sirens and my poor computer could not breathe using IE.... Then I ran into Kaspersky, but that luck only lasted for 30 days as well; they wanted $70... Since free Firefox NOTHING not one single intruder. I have peace. IE now sits and ruts…, while the FF plug-ins make beautiful music. So, I go get the button, and what do I read? They, Google, now not only have a referral system for adsense with neat little buttons, but they will take Firefox under their wings with something like ‘Google recommends Firefox’. I am touched! It’s the best thing to happen for us, for these guys operate in a speed that suits me, compared with MS. They’re livin’. But, listen to this, on the SAME DAY, yes, yesterday, I get this article from Jim Edwards of http://simurl.com/wonderwords named ”Google's Next Step: Are Print Mail Order Catalogs Dead?” He describes how any respectable US print catalog is being listed and the graphics of each page shown in their catalog database for free, and permanently. Google even update it manually. My favorite feature is that your objects on scanned print pages will be linked to their twins on your site. I’d call that traffic. Yep, the top quality traffic is free. Been saying that. So, last night, I stayed up, had to anyway, because I was on a watch. Uploading my large files to http://simurl.com/showcase, when ms automatic XP update suddenly wanted to restart the computer. Took me a while to find the way to switch that off. Don’t you envy the life of those, who spend their days in a dialogue with heartwarming Microsoft-warez. Have we created a monster buying Bill’s stuff? My day swishes by enduring Frontpage crashes and Word peculiarities I may never get used to, and yet I somehow am. No, that’s not the reason why I wrote this. What I wanted to say is: “Get your print catalog to Google in time for Christmas.” US only. 1- Download this Free: http://www.techsrl.com/easycatalog/English/download.htm (Demo-limited to 10) 2- Upload your Files Here and pay very little: http://www.printpelican.com/ (Very little! Minimum 25 Catalogs) 3- Go to http://catalogs.google.com/googlecatalogs/catalog_vendors.html and get the mailing address. I give you 10 days. So, then I think, what about the guys from Australia, New Zealand, England, Canada, South Africa, India? Easy, last night I stayed up and made a site to let them in on it. Maybe you would like to do it, too; Get a permanent spot on Google’s new catalog beta site, I mean. Come look. Gotta be subscribed.

Keyword Density and Search Engine Optimization

Denver search engine optimization Search engine optimization Denver Keyword Density and Search Engine Optimization If you looked into Denver search engine optimization (SEO) in the last couple of years, you probably got a bunch of information about keywords. You learned a lot of ways, some of them a bit tricky, for maximizing the keywords on your website so as to improve your ranking on the search engine results pages. Keywords have been around for a while now as little tools for making the content of your page look attractive to the software, called spiders or web crawlers, that major search engines use to find relevant sites to match user’s search terms. Ways to Use Keywords There are several ways that sites use keywords to get a boost in the rankings, and not all of them are legitimate anymore. Here are the basics: •Content - You cram as many keywords into your content on each page as possible. This usually meant up to fifteen or twenty keywords per page, and that is a lot of keywords. When a user read the page, they were inundated with words that matched what they were looking for. Unfortunately, the content itself was seldom as useful as it could be since it was more focused on keyword density than on helpful information. •META tags and alt tags - These are the keyword placement opportunities found in the HTML code of each page on your site. The search engine spiders would crawl through this code and look for matching terms. So even if you didn’t talk about a particular topic on one page, your META tags could claim you did and draw visitors. Alt tags are the same thing but for images. •Page titles and descriptions - If you could get the right combination of keywords in your page titles and the brief descriptions embedded in your source code, you could get the attention of search engine spiders. So Denver search engine optimization teams were suggesting some pretty keyword dense titles and descriptions that were not necessarily accurate or useful to the visitor. Keyword Evolution Today, these are still valid placements for keywords. You can use them in your content, place them in your page titles and descriptions, and embed them in your HTML code in the form of META tags and alt tags. The difference in the most recent search engine software changes and the spiders of old is the type of keyword use they are looking for. More is not always better today. In fact, a bunch of keywords crammed onto a page of useless content will not boost your ranking, rather it might lower it. Instead, search engine spiders are looking for keywords that occur naturally in the text of a website. For search engine optimization, Denver businesses are going back to the natural way of presenting information on the web. Articles with useful information, META tags and alt tags that accurately describe what’s on the page, and titles and descriptions that direct a user easily to the information they need. These are the SEO methods that work now with major search engines like Google. So when you’re thinking about SEO, natural is the keyword of the moment

Link Popularity and Search Engines

Link popularity has become increasingly important among the search engines. Because link popularity goes hand in hand with search engine optimization, it is important for any company with a web presence to build a link development strategy. Many online marketing specialists believe that link popularity is simply obtaining as many links as possible. However, the quality of the link holds more "weight" than the quantity of links. You will get better results in the search engines if you have link popularity from sites that have considerable traffic. To develop popularity for your web site, you should submit your site to the most visited directories. Yahoo (of course), LookSmart, About.com, and Open Directory are examples of major directories. Also, to further develop link popularity, you should consider sites/directories that are very industry specific, such as healthatoz.com for a health-related site. Even more important, it can help your search engine ranking if your site is reviewed by a directory that is associated with a search engine. To be accepted into a major directory, we recommend that your site have content that can show credibility in your field. A tips page, links page, or a "how-to" page can showcase your credibility on your product or service. For example, we can almost always tell when a new client site is added to Yahoo by looking at an Google ranking. Oftentimes, we will obtain a top 30 ranking for a client, then suddenly the site will move to a #1 position. Sure enough, when we go into Yahoo, we will see that the client site has been added. That's one of the reasons that we think a listing in Yahoo is essential. Obtaining links from other web sites is not enough to obtain long-term results on both the search engines and directories. People have to actually click on those links to your web site and browse your web site. AND they need to return to your web site when they see the quality content, products, and/or services that you offer, i.e. the usability of your web site. That is the definition of "popularity" according to the major search engines and directories. Other terms for it are "click" popularity or "click-through" popularity. Therefore, both link popularity and click-through popularity are essential for obtaining optimal search engine placement. Remember, a search engine position is not permanent since the search engine companies change their algorithms all of the time. Being listed in directories and other sites can significantly drive traffic and sales, particularly if your site is listed in specialized directories (health, financial, and travel, for example). To check your link popularity in some search engines: For AltaVista, in the search query field, type in: link:domainname.com For Inktomi's services, in the search query field, type in: Linkdomain:domainname.com For FAST Search, in the search query field, type in your domain name: link.all:www.domainname.com For Google, in the search query field, type in your domain name: link:www.domainname.com

How to Manage Duplicate Content in Your SEO

This article will guide you through the main reasons why duplicate content is a bad thing for your site, how to avoid it, and most importantly, how to fix it. What it is important to understand initially, is that the duplicate content that counts against you is your own. What other sites do with your content is often out of your control, just like who links to you for the most part… Keeping that in mind. How to determine if you have duplicate content. When your content is duplicated you risk fragmentation of your rank, anchor text dilution, and lots of other negative effects. But how do you tell initially? Use the “value” factor. Ask yourself: Is there additional value to this content? Don’t just reproduce content for no reason. Is this version of the page basically a new one, or just a slight rewrite of the previous? Make sure you are adding unique value. Am I sending the engines a bad signal? They can identify our duplicate content candidates from numerous signals. Similar to ranking, the most popular are identified, and marked. How to manage duplicate content versions. Every site could have potential versions of duplicate content. This is fine. The key here is how to manage these. There are legitimate reasons to duplicate content, including: 1) Alternate document formats. When having content that is hosted as HTML, Word, PDF, etc. 2) Legitimate content syndication. The use of RSS feeds and others. 3) The use of common code. CSS, JavaScript, or any boilerplate elements. In the first case, we may have alternative ways to deliver our content. We need to be able to choose a default format, and disallow the engines from the others, but still allowing the users access. We can do this by adding the proper code to the robots.txt file, and making sure we exclude any urls to these versions on our sitemaps as well. Talking about urls, you should use the nofollow attribute on your site also to get rid of duplicate pages, because other people can still link to them. As far as the second case, if you have a page that consists of a rendering of an rss feed from another site – and 10 other sites also have pages based on that feed - then this could look like duplicate content to the search engines. So, the bottom line is that you probably are not at risk for duplication, unless a large portion of your site is based on them. And lastly, you should disallow any common code from getting indexed. With your CSS as an external file, make sure that you place it in a separate folder and exclude that folder from being crawled in your robots.txt and do the same for your JavaScript or any other common external code. Additional notes on duplicate content. Any URL has the potential to be counted by search engines. Two URLs referring to the same content will look like duplicated, unless you manage them properly. This includes again choosing the default one, and 301 redirecting the other ones to it. By Utah SEO Jose Nunez

Website Optimization: Bring More Traffic To Your Site The Right Way

Search engine optimization is not difficult to understand. You don’t have to be a mathematical wizard to get the basic idea. Website optimization is simply the art and science of building web pages that provide the most relevant answers to the various queries that people make when they use a search engine. The person who is making a query wants an answer to her question, and the search engine is trying to provide the best answer. Your job, as a website manager, is to provide web pages that will satisfy the person making the query and the search engine as well. Search engine optimization is not about tricking the search engines. You can get away with a trick for a short time, but if you are in business for the long run it is better to base your success on solid procedures. Here is what you can do to satisfy the end users and the search engines. 1. Find out how your would-be customers use a search engine. What terms do they use when they are searching for your products? This is the $64,000 question. If you target the right words you will get the kind of traffic you want, the people who will buy your product or service. If you target the wrong words you may not get any traffic at all. This part of Internet optimization is known as keyword research. Find out all the different combinations that people use when they look for a website such as yours. The overture.com search term suggestion tool will provide some help or you can use the paid service at www.wordtracker.com 2. Build Web pages based on your keywords and Key Phrases. It is a mistake to think that you can just sprinkle your keywords in the meta tags of any old web page and then get a high position in the search engines. If your page is only tangentially related to the query it will not get a high ranking in the search engines. However if you have written a web page that provides solid information directly related to the search term, then any surfer who ends up there will be satisfied. And, if you present your information properly, this is the kind of page that the search engines want to deliver to their users. 3. The last step in optimization is to present your material properly. The best website promotion tip that anyone can give you is not to cheat in this process. Don’t stuff your keywords into your copy unnaturally or write them in invisible text on the bottom of your web page. If your copy is really about a particular keyword or key phrase, then simply place it in the title tag, the description tag , the headlines on the page and in text link on the page. You can use a keyword density checker to see if you have used your keyword enough. You can also just read your copy aloud to see how you are doing. If it doesn’t sound right, you may have overdone it. If you do your web page optimization in this three-step way everyone will end up satisfied: the web visitor, the search engines and you.

How To Drive Free Traffic To Your Site With Articles

Tools to drive visitors to your website are many but the main one that should be employed is the use of articles. The popularity of article writing and exchange has emerged as a convenient way for people to promote and get fresh content for their sites. The popular search engines want new, creative material and content for their users who are very demanding. Most internet users consider the internet to be one huge database and the search engines also see it as a giant source of information. It is a good idea to understand what it is the search engines are looking for, so rewriting an article automatically makes it something the search engines want, unique content. However, you may be of a mind to start writing articles from scratch and discard the idea of rewriting existing articles and if that is the case there are a few things you will need to consider. Once you have determined a topic to write on you need to do some research and this is easily done online by entering a search phrase for your topic into your favorite search engine. The importance of making the article flow correctly must not be underestimated so ensure that you have a beginning, middle and an end which should hopefully round up the article nicely. The conclusion is a winding up of all the information you have just written and doesn’t need to be more than about four sentences with most articles approximately twenty sentences long. Remember to split the article up into about three or four paragraphs for easier reading and once you have written the article, you need to include a resource box containing your information and any links. Article writing is a great way to make money online whether it’s through advertising and promotion for your website or for writing articles for other peoples’ websites. It’s the first article that can be difficult to write so how do you start? Article ideas can easily come from real life, for example, if you have a long and happy marriage, then write articles which help people with their relationships. You could also, get some ideas for niche markets and the articles would at least give you a starting point for writing. In order to excel at article writing, do not forget that it’s imperative you use good writing methods. Writing on a daily basis will help achieve this because you will come across the same problems faced by every other regular article writer but it will help you to improve. This method works well and that’s the reason why I believe you should remember that the more writing you do, the more effortless and productive it will become. I wish that these guidelines were like the Holy Grail of writing but they’re not although they have worked for many writers including myself, only you can decide whether it’s this system or another that best suits you, however, whatever method you choose, stick with it.

Part IV - Getting Your Site Indexed in MSN

Althoug MSN is lagging behind both Yahoo and Google when it comes to the ways you can get your site indexed, it is still one of the top three search engines, and it should not be ignored. MSN offers you two different ways to get your site indexed, and you should submit to both. However, before you do that, make sure that you have optimized your website first. You can get more information on optimizing your site for MSN, as well as tips on search engine optimization, here: http://www.submit-it.com/subopt.htm The tips that you will find here basically apply to optimizing your site for any search engine, but they are definitely worth the read so that you focus your search engine optimization efforts in a way that will get your site indexed. As I mentioned before, there are two ways to get indexed by MSN. The first involves submitting to the Intomi index. The Intomi index actually powers the MSN search. Inktomi is now also part of Yahoo. However, you should still submit your site here. This will allow you to get indexed by hundreds of sites if your site is accepted. http://submitit.bcentral.com/msnsubmit.htm You will need to use a valid email address for your site. Make sure that you use an email account that you actually use so that if there is a problem, you can promptly fix it. You may also need to confirm your submission. Keep in mind that there are no guarantees on turnaround, and there are also no guarantees that your site will be accepted. The second part of submitting to MSN is actually submitting to the MSN spider. Rob Benwell, of "Blogging to the Bank" fame, said that he used MSN for his searches when looking for niches, because MSN updates more quickly than either Yahoo or Google, and this was why he used MSN to test his results. This may be good advice. However, I believe that you should submit manually to MSN for the following reason: this is the number two website on the internet. It gets an enormous amount of traffic, and the traffic that this site brings you can help you with both your rankings, as well as being found by searchers. ComScore Networworks reports that 48 percent of MSN searchers are more likely to buy, whereas Google searchers are 42 percent likely to buy. Yahoo users are 41 percent more likely to buy. Although these statistics were released in 2005, you can get more information from this site on demographic buying habits of searchers: http://www.comscore.com/ Now, you can use the link below to submit directly to the MSN spider: http://beta.search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx A word of caution here: when submitting to MSN, make sure that you understand the characters in the verification image on this page. You must type them exactly as you see them, or your site won't get submitted. If your submission is successful, you will see a message that tells you your submission is successful and will ask you if you want to submit another site. Once you have MSN crawling your site, you shouldn't have to resubmit. If you follow these steps carefully, you should have no trouble getting your site accepted. Create great content, build links back to your site, and target the correct keywords, and you can get very high rankings.

The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user. • Meta Tags • Navigational links • Rich Content Meta Tags: Meta Tags are very important for your website's visibility. Many search engines read them from your site when you submit it to them .Major meta tags that you can use: Meta Title The only resource type that is currently in use is "document" This is the only tag that you need to put in for indexing purposes. Meta Description Depending on the search engine, this will be displayed along with the title of your page in an index. "content" could be a word, sentence or even paragraph to describe your page. Keep this reasonably short, concise and to the point. Meta Keyword Choose whatever keywords you think are appropriate, seperated by commas. Navigational links: at the right or at the bottom, but not on the left, of the page. When the search engines "read" your site, they read from the top left to the bottom right. Search engines place an emphasis on the first 100 words or text on the site. You do not want these words to be navigational links or Javascript. Ideally, you want to have your heading tags with your keywords in the beginning of your page. This being said, placing your links/JavaScript on the right or bottom of your page ensures the search engine spiders get to the text first, giving more weight to what's important on your page. Rich Content: The more content you have on your site the more likely someone is to find what they're looking for when they get there. Keep your site very content rich. Have a lot of pages.Update the site even twice a day if you have the time. Updating your site does not mean that you copy paste content from other sites. That will only push your rankings further down. Don't have any duplicate content. At the same time ,dont spam multiple content across the same website. When a search engine views or reviews a website, which they do at least every few months, it looks for specific characteristics found in the content of website landing pages. For information about Search Engine Optimaization visit http://www.googleseostar.org.

You want your website to appear at the top of engine results pages whenever someone types in a specific keyword, SEO web site promotions can help you get there. Studies prove that being at the top of search engine pages get a much better return on their investment compared to traditional forms of advertising. It is said by others that SEO web site promotion is the only “fool proof method' to guaranteed the top 10 placement on the page. Search engines use two types of listings, those that are paid for, usually by sponsored links, the other is organic. Organic search engines listings are those that appear down the middle of the page. Spider-driven search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN use “robots or crawlers” to score websites across the Internet. Robots will spider or crawl over each site and keep a tally of pages based on how pertinent they are. Your website placement within any spider driven search engine comes from many variables such as link popularity, density and frequency of keywords in page content, HTML code, site themeing along with more things that are too many to count here. You want your website positioned well among the major search engines and a SEO web site promotion can do this for you. The two most influential SEO web site promotion factors you can use to help your website are Link Popularity and Page Content. Link Popularity: Google's database currently has about 4 million pages making it the most popular spider-driven search engine on the Internet today. When Google spiders the Web, it finds sites by traveling through links and the more sites that link to you, the more important these search engines believe your content to be. So your focus should be on getting as many important sites that you can to link to your site, and the more hits your site get, the more sales you can make, if that is what your website is about. There are many ways to do this: exchange links with business partners and industry related sites, submit to online directories, or participate in Link Building . Page Content: The search engine spiders only spider through text and will use the content on your site to determine what your site is all about and this will help decide how popular your site will be ranked for specific keyword phrases when someone types them into a search engine. This is why keyword research is so important to obtaining top search engine placement. In order to get the top spot in search results, your going to need to know how many people are looking for your keyword phrases and also to see what kind of competition you are facing while trying to get a top spot in the search results. A SEO web site promotion may be the best thing that can happen to your website, so why wouldn't you want it?

Using Keyword Analysis to Choose to right keywords

You must do a keyword analysis in order to make sure you are choosing the right keywords for your website. A lot of companies make the mistake of creating their website using keywords they assume people would use to find their website. There is sometimes a difference in the keywords you would use in searching for your website and what your potential customers would use in searching for your website. Beginning keyword analysis
You must first write down the obvious keywords. For this article, let's pretend we are writing for a photographer who does only pets, a pet photographer. The obvious keywords would be pet photography, pet photographer, photographer, Vancouver photographer, Vancouver pet photography. Now let's look at some of the non obvious ones. Dog photographer, cat photographer etc… There are a few other such as: pet photos, pet pictures, animal photography, animal photos, animal pictures, animal pics, pet pics, pet pix, pet people, petpeople, dog grooming, dog pictures, cat pictures, bird pictures, dog photos, dog images, animal images, pet suites, dog photography, puppy photos, location photography and animal art. Now that you have created this great list of possible keywords, I am sure you are asking, now what? We are going to see which keywords are searched for most often and which keywords have less competition. In Google "pet photography" came back with 24,900,000 results. This is a lot of results. The more results, the more competition, the harder you have to work to get a good placement. Back to the basics.
Since we are a pet photographer and we are located in Vancouver, BC, Canada, we might need a results a little closer to home. I can only assume that people in Vancouver looking for a pet photographer would look for one in Vancouver. Thus, using the term Vancouver Pet Photography. The term Vancouver pet photography in Google, returned 1,870,000 results, which makes Vancouver Pet photography a better keyword with less competition. Now let's look at: Vancouver pet photographer this keyword yielded 3,360,000 which is 3 x times more that the last keyword we analyzed. I am sure this gives you an idea of how we make sure we have al list of all the keywords that a potential client might use to find your website. Now that you have gone through every keyword and got to see how much competition there is for that keyword it gives you a better idea on which keywords to use. Now a quick tip. Optimize each page with only one or two keywords. Do this to your entire website and make sure you have a really good navigation system on your website so, that if your potential client searches for dog photos and ended up entering your website at 5 pages in, he is still able to find what he is looking for because you have a great navigation system or sitemap that will lead him to the right page. Also, for more competitive keywords you would have to create more pages for that one keyword.

How to get a Website Indexed Fast

Get Indexed Fast What does getting indexed mean? The search engines keep a cache of every web page in their index. In English, this means: The search engines make a copy of every web page they visit and put in their records… ummm, I think that’s what I mean. When you use a search engine the results list relevant pages to your search, usually ten results per page. Each result includes a live “link” to the page, and a “cache” or “snap-shot” of the page, recorded the last time the spider visited that page, at some time in the past. If you wish to get a website indexed, first you must have a website… preferably a real one that you own, not a “free” website a’ la Geocities etc. It only costs about $8 to register a domain name, and about $5 a month for cheap hosting, while $10 a month will get you very good quality hosting. To get indexed fast, I recommend you start a blog on your site. This can be with any blog software, but I think that WordPress is the best… If you get good quality hosting, it will include cPanel and Fantastico scripts. In fantastico scripts are about 50 scripts you can automatically install on your server with one click… and WordPress is one of them. The alternative is to manually install wordpress yourself. Once you have built the basic barebones website (Main page, ½ a dozen content pages, and a sitemap linking them together, it’s time to get indexed in the search engines. You can “submit” your site to the search engines if you wish, but that is too slow. Here’s where the blog comes into play… post articles or messages to your blog on a daily basis, and don’t miss a day for the first few weeks at least. The posts must be interesting, and relevant to your site. Configure your blog to automaticlly “ping” the blog directories every time you publish a new post. Here’s what happens… Google, Yahoo, MSN and the other search engines are always looking for fresh content to serve up to their search visitors or clients, and one place they look for fresh content is in blogs. Search engines absolutely love blogs, because they are dynamic — updated on a regular basis by their owners – as apposed to normal website pages which largely remain static – unchanged for months on end. If you update your blog every day by adding fresh articles or other content, the search engines will notice, and they will soon be visiting your blog every day like clockwork. I include a link to my regular website pages by adding a link to either my homepage or sitemap, in the sidebar (menu) of my blog. The second best thing Search Engines love after fresh content is “links”… they will literally die for links, and if they find a link anywhere that they’ve not seen before, they make a record of it, then follow to to where ever it may lead… and if the link they find is on your blog, youbetter make sure it leads to the sitemap of your website. Double check that it does, by clicking on it after you make it. Yahoo and MSN will list your website pages as soon as they visit them, and will usually index them within a few days. As soon as they are indexed, people can find them in search results. And that’s how easy it is to get indexed fast.

Web Promotion - SEO Strategy

What's it like to work for a world class SEO? What secrets could you glean on website promotion? The SEO business is sexy, exciting and challenging. While most people want to improve and promote their site, web promo companies often deal with such diverse clients, it sharpens their instincts for what works and what don't work in the SEO game. This article presents a few tricks, tips and myths about how to SEO your website into GOOGLE heaven. Content + SEO = Top GOOGLE Positions If you have great content and decent SEO techniques, you're webs site should do pretty well in the search engines. If you have SEO stuffed pages full of garbage keyword phrases, sooner or later, you're gonna pay the price. There are too many billions of dollars at stake for cheap tricks to raise search engine rankings for long. Combine great content with great SEO instincts and bang... you're website traffic will skyrocket. Here are some common tips, you may have heard, but are worth repeating. Website Design - SEO Strategy If you can't highlight and grab the text off of your website - look out! If you can't grab it and paste it into a document, how do you think a search engine is gonna read it put it in their search engine. Sure, people will tell you, don't worry, the search engines index it not problem. Maybe they are right, my gut say Watch Out! Keep it simple! Keyword Selection - SEO Strategy You can spend hours researching your keywords, try lots of combo's and still get zero results in the search engines. What the problem? CONTENT! The key words and the content have to flow together. For example, if you write about dog grooming and switch to a few cat grooming examples, you may defeat your SEO efforts. If you write for the search engine like you were talking to a ten year old, you'll probably get much higher SEO results. Meta Tag Mania - SEO Strategy There are tons of meta tag how to's to read and confuse you. Here's a tip for writing better meta tags - pretend you're asking them out on a date and just say what you have to say without all the bull corn. For example, "I'm ah, going to be in the area this evening, and wonder if you would ahh. oh yeah and I just rebreed something... ah, what was I trying to say is ahh, there's a nice film tonight if you would like to ah... Now compare that speech that never got to the point with, "Look girl, I think you’re beautiful, would you like to see a movie with me?" And shut up!!! Copy Writing - SEO Strategy Ditto for the copy writing - less is more. Pretend you're writing for NPR. What do they do? They tell you what they are going to tell you, tell you what the have to say and then tell you what the told you. NPR are no dummies, if that's what they do, it must be good so jump on the band wagon and blow your trumpet. Image Tags Copy - SEO Strategy By the time you're concerned with adding image tags to SEO your website, you either have a great site way, way up their in the search engines or you're a SEO junky that needs help. No body can assure you #1 rankings on Google so don't set your sails for impossible goals. Someday, we'll all wake up in the 1980's again and discover the sense of freedom people back in pre-internet era.

Sorry, Dmoz is not Home - Please Leave a Message.

That’s exactly the message I feel I am getting every time I visit Dmoz.org to try and list another website into its directory. You visit the site, leave your directory submission (your message), and never hear from them! Yes, it takes a long time to have your website reviewed for submission and it gets you thinking if they are even home in the first place. I have had many questions and complaints about Dmoz and have tried to answer them as correctly as possible. But the common question is “when will they return my call?” For those of you who are new to the term “Dmoz”, it is the Open Directory Project which is the largest and most comprehensive human edited directory of the web. For your website to be accepted into Dmoz, it has to be reviewed by a human editor. If accepted, then your site is seen as a trusted source by search engines, especially Google. Combined with some SEO work, it will give you that extra boost within the rankings, however the only problem is that the editors take a long time to review the websites. If you take a look at how many volunteer editors they have (71,816 last time I checked), compared to the number of website submissions they receive (we’re talking hundreds and thousands of websites), then obviously it will take a long time for the editors to get around to yours. To add to that, theses editors work for free and each one is assigned to a certain category for reviewing websites. The worst case scenario, you have a new website that has just been submitted to a category with the least number of editors monitoring it, which explains the long waiting time (up to 2 years, if not longer). When Dmoz first started (1998), it took no longer than 6 weeks to have you website listed into their directories. With demand now running high, the wait is a lot longer and editors are a lot more selective. Never the less, there is no need to get frustrated as there are alternatives to gaining links from a combination of other sources that are just as effective as a link from Dmoz. For instance, you can submit your website to various directories such as Yahoo! and find many other resources on the web on ways to improve your link popularity. If you perform any search and look at the top five websites, you will notice that in most cases these websites do not have a Dmoz listing. This shows that some ethical SEO work and incoming relevant link building will get you those desired ranks. Having said all that, there is no need to wait for Dmoz to come around. All focus should be diverted on other ways to improve your search engine rankings. If you don’t hear from Dmoz, then there is no reason to get frustrated on their lack of efficiency, for your goals can be much easily attained through other sources. On the other hand, if you do hear from Dmoz, take it with a smile and be sure to make good use of their listing with some search engine optimisation for your website.

How search engines work

A search engine operates, in the following order: 1) Crawling; 2) Deep Crawling Depth-first search (DFS); 3) Fresh Crawling Breadth-first search (BFS); 4) Indexing; 5) Searching. Web search engines work by storing information about a large number of web pages, which they retrieve from the WWW itself. These pages are retrieved by a web crawler (also known as a spider) — an automated web browser which follows every link it sees, exclusions can be made by the use of robots.txt. The contents of each page are then analyzed to determine how it should be indexed. Data about web pages is stored in an index database for use in later queries. Some search engines, such as Google, store all or part of the source page (referred to as a cache) as well as information about the web pages, whereas some store every word of every page it finds, such as AltaVista. This cached page always holds the actual search text since it is the one that was actually indexed, so it can be very useful when the content of the current page has been updated and the search terms are no longer in it. This problem might be considered to be a mild form of linkrot, and Google's handling of it increases usability by satisfying user expectations that the search terms will be on the returned web page. This satisfies the principle of least astonishment since the user normally expects the search terms to be on the returned pages. Increased search relevance makes these cached pages very useful, even beyond the fact that they may contain data that may no longer be available elsewhere. When a user comes to the search engine and makes a query, typically by giving keywords, the engine looks up the index and provides a listing of best-matching web pages according to its criteria, usually with a short summary containing the document's title and sometimes parts of the text. Most search engines support the use of the boolean terms AND, OR and NOT to further specify the search query. An advanced feature is proximity search, which allows you to define the distance between keywords. The usefulness of a search engine depends on the relevance of the results it gives back. While there may be millions of Web pages that include a particular word or phrase, some pages may be more relevant, popular, or authoritative than others. Most search engines employ methods to rank the results to provide the "best" results first. How a search engine decides which pages are the best matches, and what order the results should be shown in, varies widely from one engine to another. The methods also change over time as Internet usage changes and new techniques evolve. Most web search engines are commercial ventures supported by advertising revenue and, as a result, some employ the controversial practice of allowing advertisers to pay money to have their listings ranked higher in search results. The vast majority of search engines are run by private companies using proprietary algorithms and closed databases, the most popular currently being Google, MSN Search, and Yahoo! Search. However, Open source search engine technology does exist, such as ht://Dig, Nutch, Senas, Egothor, OpenFTS, DataparkSearch and many others. -----------------------------------------------------------

How Keywords Affect Your Rankings

This article explains a few things about SEO, and if you're interested, then this is worth reading, because you can never tell what you don't know. We all want to know how keywords affect our rankings, but to find out we’ll need to do a little work. Many say keywords are the key to good search engine rankings, although they aren’t at all the only factor. If you need a tool to help you decide on your keywords, try Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool – it allows you to test your keyword rankings by showing you statistics on recent searches for them. It’s a great tool when you have no clue which keyword you should choose, as it can give you a list of terms that were recently searched on. Keyword Density. Keyword density refers to the number of the keywords contained within your text relative to the amount of text there is. Preferred keyword density ratios vary between search engines, but you should generally try to keep them between two and eight percent (major search engines prefer the lower end). Keyword analysis tools can help to optimize a web page’s keyword density. These tools are good if you’re not sure of what you’re doing, as they’re very intuitive and explain things as you go. Counting the Keywords. Many SEO experts will tell you that the keyword density of your text isn’t a very important factor, and that you should be careful not to overdo it. So is there a limit? How many times should you use your keywords? SEO experts won’t be able to answer these questions for you, because no-one’s really sure of the answer. The best answer is that it changes regularly, and you can never be sure – you have to experiment to see what works for you. Location of Keywords. When testing the effects of keyword location, we found that pages with the keywords at the top and bottom of the page ranked higher on Google than pages with the keywords in the middle. I trust that what you've read so far has been informative. The following section should go a long way toward clearing up any uncertainty that may remain. Many other search engines also give keywords more or less weight based on their location, but keep in mind that each search engine’s algorithm is different. Here’s a list of how most search engines prioritize keyword positions, from most to least: 1. Domain name. 2. Page title. 3. Headings (i.e. H1, H2, etc.). 4. Body text (the first 2 to 3 KB usually counts more). 5. Meta tags (especially description). 6. Links (including keywords in the URL or link text of links to you). 7. Alt text (the ‘alt’ descriptions for your pictures). Really, though, keyword density is one of those areas where you’ll have trouble on your hands if you try to second guess the search engines. Be cautious. As your knowledge about SEO continues to grow, you will begin to see how SEO fits into the overall scheme of things. Knowing how something relates to the rest of the world is important too.

Free Report Shows You How Rise To The Top Of The Google Search Engines

No one needs to know all of the ranking criteria in order to get to the top of search engine lists. In fact, even if you were extremely good at it, Google could and will change algorithms at anytime. The game of getting to the first page can be complicated, but doesn't need to be. "PJ" is prepared to explain in his free report, just how easy it can be. "This information is very helpful to both the novice setting out to sell his or her product for the very first time, or perhaps the more experienced Internet salesperson who is frustrated with the costs of the high profile SEO professionals". "It will take perseverance, patience and the willingness to trust in the methods that have been proven time and time again," PJ says. "Also, although you won't advance to the top overnight, it's going to be much quicker than you think". Paying for the top position rarely works - the most popular search engine doesn't allow it, and users ignore the paid-for listings anyway (just like they ignore banner ads). Beautiful graphics and stunning animations usually reduce your search engine ranking! Massive lists of repetitive keywords don't work - search engines use natural language syntax checking and frequency analysis to eliminate such pages from consideration. PJ resides in a Eden Prairie, Minnesota which is an upscale suburb just outside of Minneapolis. He has been interested in Search Engine placement for quite some time. Now , finally he says he is prepared to "spill all the beans" to those interested in his years of research. "Be ready", he says, "You're going to be surprised to see just how simple it is". Optimizing for Rankings – Things to Do and Avoid

Search engine optimization is a much-debated topic and there is a lot of different on the net. Let’s cut through the muck and discuss things you should and shouldn’t pursue to get high rankings. Optimizing for Rankings – Things to Do and Avoid Before blasting into the subject, we need to define optimization. It simply refers to the manipulation of a site to gain top rankings on the three search engines that dominate the search traffic on the net – Yahoo, Google and MSN. If you do a search on Google, the optimized listings are found in the large section on the left hand side of the page. These are often referred to as organic rankings since you don’t pay for placement. Of course, you manipulated the page for optimization, but we will stick with organic as a name. The first optimization tip is the most basic and the one many people screw up. Pick the correct keywords for your site! The correct keywords are not what you personally think based on your knowledge of your service or product. They are not the phrases returned in the Overture inventory tool. The only place you will find the exact keyword phrases you should use are in Wordtracker. The site gives you an analytical tool that provides the exact keyword phrases being used by your prospects, how often they are being used and which are easiest to get high rankings on. It costs a whopping $8 for a single session, but you will want to get a year subscription so you can pick up different cycles of keywords. Your prospects will search for different things in summer compared to winter. The second thing to consider is the isolation keyword strategy. Many people will try to cram as many keywords into a page as possible. The accepted standard is 10 to 15 words. This is an old approach that works, but it will take much longer to get high rankings. Instead, you should develop a list of as many keyword phrases as possible. A single page should be made for each keyword phrase. You should never have to pick one keyword phrase instead of another for your site. Instead, you should make individual pages for each phrase. A major third optimization tip is interlinking. The links from one page of your site to another matter a lot. When you create a link, make sure the link is the anchor text for the page the prospect will be going to. Anchor text is simply the keyword phrase on that page. Turning to things you should avoid in optimization, well, there are a lot. Do not put your site name in your meta title, the search engines will list you high without it. Do not skimp on text, you need at least 250 words per page. Do not put database parameters in your urls because spiders have problems reading them. Stay away from flash as much as possible for the same reason. Stick to a single subject per page, to wit, do not wonder around like a drunken web designer! For the love of God, do not use frames. Finally, keep your html code streamlined so search engines can read it with ease. The list of things to do and avoid is nearly endless. Follow these simple steps, however, and you will see marked improvement in your rankings.

How to Measure Keyword Density For Your SEO

This article will guide you through the main myths around keyword density and SEO. Even though keyword density should be a part of your SEO efforts, there is a lot of confusion about what “density” is and how to apply it properly. Also, how much is density percentage is good? This will apply to both new and existing sites, and I am covering here what to know about keyword density. There are 2 ways of calculating density. The basic method consists of measuring the number of times a keyword appears on the page as a percentage of the total word count of that page. The complex method consists of measuring keyword density of the page plus the text components in meta tags: Title, Keywords, Alt Text, Description, and Comments. Most SEOs refer to the first method when talking about keyword density though. But, how do search engines measure keyword density? They actually use the complex method to measure it. I will explain later how to adjust to this. Were should the keywords be used? Diversify the density of your keywords in different areas of your page. Starting with the Title, and following with the beginning of the page, like in the headings, other sub-headings, and in the introductory paragraphs would certainly be of benefit. Every search engine algo is different, so you must choose an average keyword density that can make your site rank well in the top ten positions in the SERPs. The importance of keyword density. Keyword density can be very beneficial when done right, but it can also have a very negative influence when overdone. This is known as "keyword stuffing". When you stuff keywords in your page, this will be detected and your site will get penalized for doing so. This could go as far as getting your entire site blacklisted from a particular search engine, if you are found keyword stuffing too many times. There is no secret keyword formula. No matter what you may think, or read on forums or even articles by such “SEO Gurus”, there is no secret formula for keyword density. There are, however, certain guidelines that need to be followed, and they are available to the public form the search engines themselves. Keywords density is one of most critical elements in SEO, and if you can master it you get higher rankings for your site. So what is the right keyword density? Your keyword density must be right to improve your search engine ranking. The “ideal” keyword density will always help to achieve high rankings. But how much is too much? If too low, you will not get the maximum benefits, if too high your site might get flagged as spam… Ok, there is no “one number fits all” here, but based on real case studies, the average top ranking Google site averages basic 1.9% keyword density. I wouldn’t go over 2%. This is an average value, and I am talking about basic percentages here, not complex. But it translates well to their complex values. By Utah SEO Jose Nunez

The more backlinks from relevant sites with good page rank, the merrier. So how exactly do you gather backlinks? It's not an easy task but it's definitely less nerve-wracking than HTML if you are not the techie type. Here are some off-page SEO tips: 1. Article Marketing Quality content has been discovered to be real king. Everyone is hungry for fresh and quality info and providing it will make backlinks go pouring in. It helps a lot to be a keen writer to be successful on this endeavor. Also, practise the proper way of using a resource box. It should only include a website that contains information relevant to the article you submit to article directories. 2. Forum Participation Look for forums that are relevant to your website's content and keep on sharing information that will be indispensable for the members of the forums. Your signature or that tag-along message at the last part of each of your posts is what will work for your off-page SEO campaign. Keep it simple and make sure that it conveys something about your website. Learn how to hyperlink to make it easy for the people who want to visit your site. 3. Blogging Blogs or web logs are now the most popular weapons of SEO experts. Aside from being easy-to-update, they don't require a too formal tone, which is what many readers are into. Informal dialog which can be accomplished through readers leaving comments and the blog author replying to the comments is what also keeps blogs fresh and search engine friendly. Maintaining a blog that's again relevant to your website's content will keep the search engines in touch with your site. Don't forget to have a link on your main website from your blog. The secret to be successful in carrying out these off-page SEO methods is to be consistent. Submitting quality articles to websites at least two to three times a week and regularly producing content for your personalized blog is a surefire way to make your website stand out. Forum participation should also be something done more frequently since it will not only help you up your website's popularity with the search engines but also make you learn new stuff from other forum members' participation. Also, if you discover that you don't enjoy these stuff, there's always a plan B - hire someone to do them for you! Jagger Algo Update Part-2

This is the second part of the Google Jagger update discussion. The first part of this article discussed the overview of how and why Google needs to update its website ranking algorithms periodically. This article shall discuss the specific areas the Jagger update has altered in the Google algorithm. Sources at Google claim that the changes we see are part of 3-phase update (Jagger1, Jagger2 & Jagger3). At the time of writing this article, we are in the completion stage of Jagger2 update. The Jagger3 update is expected to be rolled out over the next few weeks. Jagger Update 1 The Jagger 1 update pre-shocks actually started with a string of back-link updates that began in September 2005 and continued into middle of October 2005. In mid October, Google updated its PageRank database for public view. Usually updated once a quarter, the PR update always creates a stir. While most SEO professionals heavily play-down the importance of PR in ranking, the legacy of its importance is so deep-rooted in the minds of most webmasters, that it is difficult to shake it off as an insignificant ranking parameter. Jagger Update 2 It is believed that the Jagger 2 update is now complete and replicated to all the data centers of Google. However, you may still notice some fluctuations in the rankings as things stabilize for each update. We are now at the threshold of the 3rd phase of the Jagger update, which is expected to initiate sometime in the second week of November 2005. From what we have studied so far, Google has re-engineered several aspects of its algorithm. Amongst other aspects we will know as things roll out, we believe it has altered the impact of the following:- 1. Value of incoming links 2. Value of anchor text in incoming links 3. Content on page of incoming links 4. Keyword repetitions in anchor text 5. Age of the incoming links 6. Nature of sites linking to you 7. Directory links 8. Speed and volume of incoming links created 9. Value of reciprocal links 10. Impact of outbound links / links page on your website 11. Sandbox effect / age of your site, domain registration date 12. Size of your site's content 13. Addition and frequency of fresh content update 14. Canonical / sub domains, sub-sub domains 15. Multiple domains on same IP numbers 16. Duplicate content on same site or on multiple domains 17. Over-optimization, excessive text markup 18. Irrational use of CSS We are studying various aspects of the Jagger algo update and are closely monitoring the impact of changes in each of the above mentioned parameters and many more not mentioned here. Mastering The Google Dance And The Use Of Page Rank

The update of the Google index is often referred to as the Google dance. For several days when Google is updating their index to include new pages and update their algorithms, search results almost seem to take on a life of their own. High positioned sites have been known to drop into near obscurity while the lesser-judged sites suddenly find themselves careering towards dizzy heights in the rankings. While this phenomenon is usually relatively short lived, lasting only two or three days, many webmasters take it to be a sign of things to come during the next major update. Spurious Search Engine Results Google uses a number of patented algorithms to determine the exact ranking of every indexed website. They also attempt to index as many websites and pages as they can possibly find. In order to do this they utilize tens of thousands of different hosts and over a dozen data centers. It is impossible for Google to update each and every one of these at the same time and it is also impossible for them to alternate between using old data and the new updated data. This leads to some potentially skewed results in their listings. However, these results are not usually indicative of future rankings. Relying Too Heavily On Toolbar PR The problem for many webmasters is an over reliance on the toolbar page rank. This is a problem for several reasons. Page rank isn’t the be all and end all of search engine rankings. It is used to determine the weight of an inbound link, meaning that a link from a page with a PR5 is much better than a link from a page with PR2. However, having a PR6 won’t necessarily mean that your site will list above all the PR4 sites on the web. Relevancy Of Website Content The logic is fairly simple. The PR of your site is a numerical value determined by numerous factors including the number of inbound links. In no way can this numerical ranking indicate the relevance of your website content when looking at a particular search term. Having a PR6 website does not necessarily mean that your site bears more relevance to a particular term than another website with a PR2. So, as well as the PR of your website, Google must also consider the topic and the content of your site and how relevant this is to the relevant search term. Toolbar PR Compared To Live PR Another problem is that the toolbar PR is only updated every three months or so, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. While you’re seeing that your site only has a PR2 it could be that it actually has a PR closer to 5. Your site will receive the credit from this “live” PR in preference to that of the toolbar PR so don’t panic. A Final Word On The Google Dance During the time the Google dance is being completed, the servers located around different data centers are upgrading and updating one at a time. This is why some sites will show spurious results and why some webmasters benefit for a day or two while others lose out. There is absolutely nothing that can be done to prevent this Google phenomenon and there is nothing you can do to hurry the process up. All that is left is to sit back and watch in amazement as the Google index dances.
